Are You A Modern Gentleman?
Are You A Modern Gentleman?

If I go by this list released by a British magazine called Country Life, I am not a modern gentleman. I’m close, and by American standards, I’m probably gentlemanly enough. I credit my “mama” for those mannerly traits. One of her single mom mantras to me was “always be a gentleman.” And that applied to people in general, not just women. The British list just doesn’t cover manners. It also includes choices, skills, and preferences. So let’s see how I stack up. According to Country Life these are the things a 21st century gentleman never does:

  1. Wear a pre-tied bowtie (I don’t wear bowties, so…pass)
  2. Drink Malibu coconut rum (Not on purpose, I’m a bourbon guy)
  3. Buy bright colored pants (No, I don’t golf)
  4. Tweet (I do, but not excessively)
  5. Put product in hair (Ok, a little gel, I have manageability issues)
  6. Write with a cheap ball point pen (I agree. I may be one of the few that still puts pen to paper, but when I do I have certain pens I like to do it with)
  7. Forget his wristwatch (I have several, but yes, I am guilty of being watch-less most of the time)
  8. Walk out of play (I’m no heathen, absolutely not!)
  9. Own a cat (I have, I don’t now, but I may again someday; get over it)
  10. Finish his food before everyone else (Look, I will wait until all the dinners are served and on the table before diving in, but after that, game on. So, big deal. I get coffee before you do. That makes me a “heel?”)

So, for the most part, I think I could make the cut in Britain as far as being a modern gentleman. But here in the good old U.S. of A., I guess holding doors, helping put on a coat, pulling out a chair and walking closest to the curb to be the first one taken out by an out of control bus, will have to do. Good day and happy weekend, people (You can’t see me, but I’m tipping my hat).
