Just a few of the professional athletes and owners to receive lifetime bans from their respective leagues.

AP97020702469Joseph “Shoeless Joe” Jackson was one of the key figures in the infamous “Black Sox” scandal, which rocked baseball and caused the introduction of a baseball commissioner. He ended his 14 seasons in the majors in 1920 with a lifetime ban.


AP299747150668Former Cincinnati Reds player and manager Pete Rose was banned for life from Major League Baseball in 1989 for a history of offenses that included gambling.


AP02092208087Marge Schott, former owner of the Cincinnati Reds, was banned in 1996, for repeated racial and ethnic slurs. Schott was later reinstated but resigned shortly thereafter.


AP95010102789Roy Tarpley was banned from the NBA in 1995. The former Dallas Mavaricks player had repeatedly violated the league’s substance abuse policy.

Lance Armstrong was banned from cycling in 2012 and stripped of his Tour de France titles after a doping scandal.


AP110915112400Former college and NFL quarterback Art Schlichter was suspended for life in 1986 by the NFL for gambling. Schlichter is currently in prison for fraud.
