Area unemployment down 0.5% in April

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Unemployment in central Ohio dropped 0.5 percent in April to 5.7 percent, lowest of any of Ohio’s large metropolitan areas, according to data released this morning by the state.

The jobless rate in the Columbus metro area has almost returned to the levels seen late last year, before a 1.6 percent jump to 7.0 percent in January, according to the report from the Department of Job and Family Services.

The unemployment rate in the region in April of 2012 was 6.1 percent and dipped to a post-recession low of 5.3 percent in November.

Delaware County enjoyed the third-lowest rate in the state – 4.5 percent – while Union County could also boast one of the lowest at 5.0 percent.

Toledo suffered with the highest unemployment of Ohio’s large cities at 7.7 percent.

The statewide unemployment figures also dropped in April, to 7.0 from 7.1 percent in March, as employers added 7,600 jobs.

The US unemployment rate was 7.5 percent.
