Army: Ohio soldier killed by explosive in Afghanistan

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) — The U.S. Army says an Ohio soldier has died in Afghanistan after being wounded when a rocket propelled grenade struck his vehicle.

The Army says Staff Sgt. Sonny C. Zimmerman, 25, of Waynesfield, Ohio, died July 16, in Mushaka, Afghanistan.

Zimmerman was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, Fort Campbell, Ky. He joined the Army in 2005.

Among his honors, Zimmerman has been awarded a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantry Badge and an Air Assault Badge.

Zimmerman is survived by his wife, Morgan C. Zimmerman of Lima, Ohio; his step-daughter, Riley A. McVicker, of Lima, Ohio; and his parents, Chris L. Zimmerman of Waynesfield, Ohio, and Michelle Fischbach of Jennings, Ohio.
