COLUMBUS, Ohio – If you live in the Columbus City Schools district, you may be asked to approve a tax levy in November.
The school board decided last night to launch an exploratory committee for a levy on the November ballot.
The board has also thrown its support behind the findings of Mayor Michael Coleman’s education panel.
The recommendations are the basis of a bill in the Statehouse, sponsored by Rep. Ann Grossman (R-Grove City).
“I was delighted with the unanimous consensus that the recommendations have received from the members of the commission,” Grossman said in a statement issued by her office.
School board members approved a resolution last night to back recommendations from the Columbus Education Commission, including sharing property taxes with charter schools, upgrading technology and hiring an independent auditor.
Grossman’s legislation authorizes the board to place an issue on the ballot to create the Office of Independent Auditor, she said.
It also increases funding for high-performing charter schools and authorizes the board to place a levy on the ballot that Grossman says would allow for the sharing of new proceeds with partnering charter schools.
