Medical marijuana issue closer to ballot

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Supporters of legalized medical marijuana took a big step toward their goal Thursday when the Ohio Ballot Board approved proposed constitutional amendment as a single ballot issue.

That allows backers of the Ohio Cannabis Rights Act to begin circulating petitions to put the issue before voters in November of 2014.

Supporters need to collect 385,253 valid signatures, equal to 10 percent of the total vote cast for governor in the most recent gubernatorial election, which was 2010, Secretary of State Jon Husted said.

Petitioners are required to collect signatures from at least 44 counties and — within each county — enough signatures to equal five percent of the total vote cast for governor in 2010.
