COLUMBUS, Ohio – Potholes sprout like forsythias in the early spring in Columbus and the city is embarking on an aggressive campaign to patch the roadway annoyances.
The city’s Department of Public Service will begin an intense two-week pothole repair program Sunday, when street maintenance crews will patch potholes daily through April 21, spokesman Rick Tilton said.
Tilton cautions: The work schedule is “weather permitting.” Potholes cannot be repaired during snow, ice and rain events, he says.
The effort will be done within regular working hours at no additional costs, without using overtime, Tilton said.
An $80 million street resurfacing program, combined with an aggressive pothole repair program, has contributed to the decrease in the number of potholes on city roadways, Tilton said.
City crews repaired 31 percent fewer potholes last year than in 2011 and Tilton says crews fixed 25,386 more potholes between November 1 and February 28.
Residents may report potholes through Facebook or Twitter, in addition to the customary 311 Customer Service Center.
Include the location of the pothole by referencing:
The name of the street where the pothole is located
The address of a home or business closest to the pothole
The direction of travel (northbound, southbound, eastbound, westbound) where the pothole is located
If it is a multi-lane street, the lane in which the pothole is located
