Suspect in January assault on deputy arrested

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The two-month search for a man who attacked a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy is over.

Deputies were able to track down and arrest Fready Lopez yesterday as he tried to run from them at a West Side home.

Lopez, 28, is accused of punching a deputy and fleeing from a traffic stop in January.

He’s charged with assault on a police officer and a second man is charged with obstructing justice for trying to drive Lopez away from the scene of the arrest, Sheriff Zach Scott said.

Deputy Joel Chairez pulled Lopez over at Murray Hill Road and Dolan Place in Prairie Township on the afternoon of January 27 and, as he questioned him, Lopez attacked him and ran away.

Sheriff’s deputies, Central Ohio Drug Task Force officers and officers from Homeland Security tracked Lopez to a house at 35 88 Brookside Boulevard, Scott said.

When the officers approached, Lopez fled in an SUV driven by Magdeleno Ventura, 47, but the vehicle was stopped and both men were arrested without incident, Scott said.
