Outstanding Women

Sally Flanagan
Sally Flanagan

Sally Flanagan is the head cook at Faith Mission’s 6th Street location and is in charge of putting together nutritionally-balanced meals, three times a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year – for the residents at
Faith Mission.

Working her whole life as a food service specialist, Sally joined the Faith Mission staff in October of 2009 after moving to
Columbus from Pittsburgh to be closer to her daughter & grand kids. She worked her
way through the ranks of cook, certified cook, and now head cook for the men’s and women’s shelters.

Along with being in charge of preparing the meals at Faith Mission, Sally is also respon- sible for training new staff, processing dona- tions, and ordering supplies for the 6th Street location, which is currently serving more than 800 meals per day. And it’s not uncommon

to see Sally take on second and third shifts (doubles & triples) when additional volunteer forces are unavailable.

When we asked Sally what she was most proud of, she felt there were so many things to mention, but wanted us to know that the honor of being chosen as one of Sunny 95’s 20 Outstanding Women is at the top of her list, as it was so unexpected and a true blessing.

She is well-known by the residents and non- residents of Faith Mission as hard-working and always taking care of their needs as well as providing good, quality meals. Sally will tell you that “in that moment when it seems like there is too much to handle, that’s when you do your best work and perform under pressure.”

Sally’s ultimate goal is to be a good role model for her grandchildren and help encourage them to succeed. She wants to continue doing what she does every day – hopefully boosting someone’s morale, giving a kind word of encouragement, and fulfilling her job duties to the best of her ability. “This is not a dream job,” Sally says, “but the dream is in knowing so many people are being helped. We are feeding record numbers of people who may not eat otherwise. I am here for the right reason, doing the best I can every day.” For that and a host of other reasons, we think Sally is outstanding!
