The CJO celebrates the centenary of two jazz legends during its 2017-2018 season with 100 Years of Buddy Rich & Dizzy Gillespie featuring Italian jazz vocalist, Roberta Gambarini, and drummer extraordinaire, Jeff Hamilton.
Roberta Gambarini was born and raised in Turin, Italy where she began singing and playing the clarinet, before moving to Milan to further her studies. A scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music brought Gambarini to America where she would be a finalist at the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Jazz critics began to take notice of the young singer, as did jazz greats Betty Carter and James Moody, who became mentors. Ms. Gambarini has twice earned Grammy nominations – the first for her debut album, “Easy to Love” in 2007, followed by “So in Love” in 2010.
It’s fitting that legendary drummer Buddy Rich is celebrated by another legendary drummer, Jeff Hamilton. A co-founder of the Grammy-nominated Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Jeff Hamilton has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in music including Toshiko Akioshi, Benny Carter, Rosemary Clooney, Natalie Cole, Dr. John, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Scott Hamilton, Gene Harris, Milt Jackson, Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli, Lalo Schifrin, George Shearing, Keely Smith, Barbara Streisand, Clark Terry, and Mel Torme. Columbus’ jazz fans experienced Hamilton’s artistry when he appeared with his trio as part of the Jazz Arts Group’s Inside Track Series (now called “Jazz Arts Group Presents”) at Copious-Notes during the 2015-2016 season.
