Ceremonies honoring John Glenn

COLUMBUS – Ohioans can wish John Glenn “Godspeed” for the final time today and tomorrow at the Statehouse and on the OSU campus.

The former astronaut and U.S. Senator died at OSU James Cancer Center on Dec.8 at the age of 95.


Saturday, 12:15 – 1:55 p.m.: Dignified transfer service followed by a procession, led by an escort platoon of United States Marines, north on High Street from Ohio Statehouse to Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St., on the OSU campus.
Parking meters will be bagged on High Street at 2:00 a.m. Saturday, will be removed as the procession passes north.
All southbound traffic will be diverted east and west
Traffic behind the motorcade can follow (3 mph walking pace)
Expect traffic delays starting at noon Saturday and ending around 2:30pm.

2:00 – 3:00 pm.: “John Glenn: Celebrating a Life of Service.” Seating is limited and tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 9:00 a.m. Thursday.

President Barack Obama and Ohio Gov. John Kasich both ordered flags flown at half-staff in honor of the man who became a national hero as the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962.

Glenn grew up in New Concord, served as a fighter pilot in World War II and Korea and represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades.

He became the oldest man in space, at age 77 in 1998.

He then spent 24 years as a Democrat from Ohio in the U.S. Senate.
