COLUMBUS — Governor Mike DeWine, his wife and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted all tested negative for COVID-19 Friday after President Donald Trump and his wife received positive test results.

DeWine, Husted and First Lady Fran DeWine were given the tests after Trump tweeted early Friday morning that he and his wife had tested positive for the disease that has killed more than 208,000 in the U.S.

DeWine and Husted issued a proclamation for Oct. 4 as a Day of Prayer President Trump and the First Lady.

The Republican governor called Trump’s positive test a “powerful reminder” that anyone can contract the deadly virus, days after the state hosted a presidential debate.

“It does not discriminate, it’s going to go after anybody, and it’s very, very contagious,” DeWine said at a briefing Friday following a whirlwind morning as states like Ohio scrambled to contact trace everyone who may have been exposed during recent visits by the president and first lady.

The number of daily new cases in Ohio reached nearly 1,500 Friday, the highest number reported in the last 21 days.
