COLUMBUS – Plank’s Bier Garten, a fixture in German Village since 1960, experience damage when fire broke out there early Wednesday morning.
The fire, which was firsts reported at 5:17 a.m. at the restaurant at 888 S. High Street, appears to have been accidental and started in an attic or utility space above the kitchen, Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin said.
He said there were no injuries and the fire was contained after a short time without spreading to the roof or kitchen.
Investigators believe the fire was the result of the breakdown of unprotected wood close to the steel exhaust hood and vent.
The business suffered approximately $50,000 in smoke and water damage, Martin said.
An employee told WBNS 10-TV that the restaurant will make repairs but was not sure when the business will reopen.
High Street was closed in both directions during the early-morning hours while crews battled the flames. Whittier Street was closed at High Street.
