Among the estimated 30,000 to 32,000 registered participants are 1,500 cancer survivors. The goal of this year’s race is to raise $700,000 for breast cancer researcher and resources for patients, families and survivors.
Komen officials say 75 percent of the money raised by the Columbus event goes to fund local programs, from free and low-cost screening mammograms to prostheses and wigs. The remainder goes to global research.
Race officials stress the importance of early detection. They say one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime but, for someone diagnosed in the early stages, the five- year relative survival rate is 98 percent.
