COLUMBUS – The Salvation Army in Central Ohio is opening a satellite drive-thru food pantry to handle the increased demand brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic downturn.
The new pantry will open on Wednesday at New Birth Christian Ministries, 3475 Refugee Road, and will be open from 9:30 to 11 a.m. No appointment is necessary.
“Families are hurting and feeling the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Many are turning to us for help. The need has always been there, now the need is just greater,” area coordinator Maj. Debra Ashcraft said.
Since March, Ashcraft says the Salvation Army has seen a 193% increase in its pantry services. The organization has provided 457,684 meals to 53,098 Individuals and 19,852 households, she said.
Each household will receive one food box which includes ingredients for about 36 meals. Food will be given while supplies last.
Additional dates for this pantry are scheduled for Sept.9 and 23 and Oct. 7 and Oct. 21.
