Suspect injured in officer-involved shooting

COLUMBUS – A suspect who police say opened fire on officers at a West Side apartment complex early Saturday is recovering from his injuries while the state investigates the incident.

UPDATE 11/14/22 10:59 a.m.: Police identified the officer involved in this incident s Ofc. Payne Vantilburg, a two-year veteran of the Division assigned to patrol.

The suspect has been identified as Lamar Ivan Blue, 37. Police have charged him with two counts of felonious assault.

The Columbus Police radio room received a call at 12:53 a.m. on a report of gunshots being fired, possibly from inside the apartment building at 690 Kingsford Road, Division of Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Albert said.

Once officers arrived on scene, they encountered a man who began shooting at the officers, striking the vehicle they arrived in, Albert said.

One officer fired back, striking the suspect who fled the scene on foot but was located a short distance away, Albert said.

Officers rendered aid until medical personnel arrived and took the suspect to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition but he was later upgraded to stable condition.

A firearm was recovered at the scene where the man was apprehended, Albert said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident, Albert said.

Armed double homicide suspect is shot, killed by Toledo police

TOLEDO (AP) — Authorities say a man suspected of fatally shooting two people inside a Toledo home was later shot and killed by police after he was found in a car holding a gun to his head.

Police responded to the home Thursday night after a caller said someone may have been shot there.

Officers found two people who had each been shot at least once.

The suspect was found elsewhere in the city sitting in a car and holding a gun to his head.

Authorities say the man refused to drop the weapon and exited the vehicle with the gun in his hand.

He was then shot and killed by officers.
