Top of the class

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State, Kenyon College and Cedarville and Otterbein universities were among the highest-ranking central Ohio schools on the latest list of the nation’s top higher-education institutions published by U.S. News & World Report.

How Ohio’s colleges fared

The magazine ranked OSU No. 54th overall on its ranking of 268 national doctoral universities and 18th among public institutions in rankings released today in its 2015 edition of “Best Colleges.”

Ohio State is the only public university in the state ranked in the top 20.

The magazine recognized higher ACT/SAT scores among OSU students and more students who graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school class, among other criteria.

National universities offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs, and are committed to research. Princeton was the No. 1 school on the list.

Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business was rated 20 in the nation and ninth among public universities.

At No. 30, Kenyon College was the highest-ranking central Ohio school on the list of national liberal arts colleges, which included schools that emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the liberal arts fields of study. Williams College, located in Williamstown, Mass., was the top school on that list.

Regional universities provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.

Otterbein (#20) and Capital University (#36) were among the highest-ranking central Ohio schools in that category and Cedarville (#3) was the top-ranked central Ohio regional college.
