COLUMBUS – After watching as a tornado got too close for comfort the night before, 1,900 triathletes hit the course for the Ironman 70.3 in Delaware Sunday.
Mike Vulanich, of San Francisco, was the overall winner, with Evan Price of Centerville and Ben Meer of Columbus finishing second and third.
The “half-ironman” contest featured a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-run.

The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF0 tornado touched down north of the triathlon course on Saturday night (see map), uprooting trees but causing no other damage or reported injuries.
The weather service confirms the twister touched down just east of US 23 and south of the Delaware State Park at 6:37 p.m., was at most 100 yards wide and traveled on the ground for 3.3 miles.
