Zoo, schools seek funding from voters

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Although it makes its home in neighboring Delaware County, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is going before voters in May asking Franklin County voters for an increase in the property tax levy to support what is considered one of the area’s premiere attractions and sources of pride.

Director Emeritus Jack Hanna took the case before the county commissioners, who agreed to place the issue on the ballot for the May 6 primary election.

The 1.25-mill levy would take effect this year and cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $125 a year. It is a continuing levy has been earmarked for “maintenance of zoological park services and facilities.”

The zoo attracts more than 2 million visitors a year.

Two school districts are also going before county voters: Officials in the Groveport-Madison district are asking voters to approve the sale of $33.3 million in bonds to pay for a new high school and renovations and improvements to other facilities. They are also asking for approval of a 2.24-mill, 38-year levy and a 6.68-mill five-year levy.

The Canal Winchester Local School District is asking for approval of a five-year 14.15-mill substitute levy.
