1 dead in weekend shootings

COLUMBUS – Police say gunfire over the weekend in Columbus killed one man, wounded a 3-year-old girl as she slept on a living room couch, four people struck while they were at a vigil for a homicide victim and a teenager at a Far East Side gas station.

A total of 11 people were shot in eight separate incidents in the city, which has seen an alarming uptick in violent crime this summer.

Officers say Jerome Steward, 26, was shot in the 400 block of Southwood Avenue on the South Side Sunday afternoon. Officers applied a tourniquet and administered CPR but Steward died later at a hospital. He was the 69th homicide victim of the year, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.

UPDATE: 7/22/20 6:33 a.m.: Police have filed an arrest warrant for Lason Booker, 20, in the shooting death of Jerome Steward.

Police say the 3-year-old had a minor leg injury after someone fired three gunshots through the front door of a home in the 500 block of Woodbury Avenue shortly after 3:00 a.m. Saturday. The girl was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she was expected to recover.

Someone opened fire shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday at a Weinland Park vigil, striking four people, including two 18-year-olds, a 20-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man. Police said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

A 17-year-old was shot while sitting in a vehicle at the Sunoco gas station at 7700 Kennedy Road at approximately 7:09 p.m. Saturday. He was in stable condition.

Other victims included a 20-year-old man shot at Eastland Mall, a 26-year-old man shot at the corner of Mount Street and Glenwood Avenue Saturday, a 62-year-old man shot while pumping gas in the 1500 block of Lockbourne Road Sunday and a 19-year-old man shot in the 200 block of Princeton Avenue Sunday.
