10-year-old dies after being hit by car

COLUMBUS – A 10-year-old boy died after being hit by a car while crossing a Northeast Side street Thursday afternoon.

Investigators with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office say Dijon Peoples, of Columbus, was crossing State Route 161 against the light with two other juveniles at the intersection with Strawberry Farms Boulevard at 1:16 p.m. when he was struck by a car and died later at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Multiple witnesses told investigators the three juveniles were crossing the street northbound toward Buenos Aires Boulevard in the crosswalk and were in the median when the east and westbound lights for State Route 161 turned green, Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said.

The children continued to travel northbound from the median when Dijon Peoples was struck by a silver Honda Accord driven by Mia Cabera, 19, Sunbury.

The Blendon Township Police Department, the Sheriff’s Office and the Westerville Division of Fire responded to the scene and Westerville paramedics transported Dijon to the hospital in critical condition, Baldwin said.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor. Baldwin says the incident remains under investigation.
