COLUMBUS – As one of her young sons used the edge of her head scarf to dry her tears, Amal Mohamed pleaded for help from the community to find the man who gunned down her husband.
Mohamed and her six children were among family members of Shueyb Abukar who attended a Tuesday news conference at which Central Ohio Crime Stoppers announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest or indictment in Abukar’s Oct. 23 slaying. UPDATE: The reward was increased to $30,000 after an anonymous donation.

The victim of an apparent robbery, Abukar, 40, was shot twice in front of his wife and children as they left the Golden Corral restaurant, at 3710 W. Dublin-Granville Rd. on the Northwest Side.

Photos of the apparent suspect (above and left) were released on Oct. 29.
“We’re hopeful that this reward will bring the suspect of this heinous crime to justice and allow his family closure,” said Carl Rankin, Crime Stoppers president.
“Just imagine having someone in your own family murdered in front of you. How sad a case is this, and the public needs to come forward and help.”
The total $10,000 reward was contributed by Crime Stoppers, members of Abukar’s family, Golden Corral and an anonymous donor.
Family and friends have said that Abukar, a taxi driver, had fled Somalia for the United States about 15 years ago and moved to Columbus a few years ago, leaving behind jobs as a translator and at a bank in New York City.
