12-year-old girl wounded in shootout on Hilltop street

COLUMBUS – A 12-year-old girl was injured trying to escape a shootout between two groups of girls on the Hilltop and a woman was killed in the front yard of a home in an unrelated incident late Tuesday.

Detectives say the girl was in the area of S. Wayne Avenue and W. Broad Street at approximately 9:45 p.m. when two groups of girls met to fight and a gun battle ensued.

The girl was struck as she was getting into a vehicle to leave the scene and was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in stable condition, according to Det. Mautez Fulton of the Felony Assault Unit.

Police also charged a man in the deadly shooting of a woman on Plains Boulevard just before midnight.

Officers responding to a reported shooting found Tonya Delafeld lying in the front yard of 1760 Plains Boulevard, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, just after 11:15 p.m., according to Sgt. Doug Jones of the Homicide Unit.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, the 70th homicide of the year in the city, and Kevin Arnold, 59, was arrested on a murder charge.

No other information was available early Wednesday.

Detectives say one man was wounded in an exchange of gunfire between multiple groups of people in the 800 block of Gilbert Street just after 1:00 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Division of Police Twitter feed.

The investigation was still underway early Wednesday.
