13-year-old is second suspect in pizza delivery man’s death

COLUMBUS – Police say the second suspect in the robbery and fatal shooting of a pizza delivery driver last month is 13 years old.

Columbus police say Jalen Dewain Hughes was interviewed by homicide detectives Thursday and implicated in the July 30 robbery and killing of James Flannery, robbed and shot on July 30 after he took an order from Papa John’s to a Southeast Side property that turned out to be vacant.

Officers found Flannery, 59, while responding to a reported traffic accident. They say it appears Flannery drove away after being robbed and shot but then crashed in the intersection of Kimberly Parkway and S. Hamilton Road.

An 18-year-old suspect has already been charged in the slaying. His bond was set Thursday at about $2 million. A message was left with his public defender.

Detectives believe that there may be still more participants in this crime and are asking anyone with any information to contact the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Crime Stoppers at 614-645-TIPS.
