15-year-old girl killed in overnight shooting

COLUMBUS – Shamya Saultz was visiting with friends and relatives inside a South Side apartment early Thursday when, in an instant, everything changed.

A suspect, wearing all black, burst into the room just after 12:30 a.m. and opened fire on the group, hitting the 15-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, according to Columbus police.

Shamya would not live to see the sunrise.

Shamya and the boy, whose name was not released, were taken from the scene of the shooting on W. Welch Avenue to Grant Medical Center with Shamya suffering from life-threatening injuries, Sgt. J.R. Strayer of the Homicide Unit said.

While the boy was listed in stable condition, Strayer says Shamya died at 3:52 a.m., the 49th murder victim in Columbus this year.

Police did not name any suspects and the investigation continues.
