17 non-citizens voted in 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio attorney general’s office is considering charges against people accused of voting in the 2012 general election Ohio even thought they were not U.S. citizens.

Secretary of State Jon Husted says a cross-check of voter registrations with drivers’ licenses uncovered 17 non-citizens who were among the 5.6 million voters who cast ballots in the election.

Husted says none of the cases involve illegal or undocumented immigrants, and there is no evidence of undocumented immigrants voting.

More than 274 legal non-citizens who registered but did not vote will get letters ordering them to cancel their registrations, Husted said.

To get a driver’s license, someone who is not a U.S. citizen, but is a legal resident of Ohio, must provide documentation to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, which keeps the records on file, Husted said. By cross-checking that database with election data, Husted’s office came up with the lists of illegal and improperly-registered voters.
