COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The Columbus police department’s cold case squad is taking another look at a four-decade-old slaying to decide whether to reopen the case.
Christie Mullins was found beaten to death behind a shopping center on the north side of Columbus on Aug. 23, 1975.
A suspect in the killing of the 14-year-old girl was acquitted at trial two years later amid suggestions the wrong man had been arrested.
Police will re-examine the case file for potential eyewitnesses, physical evidence or possible DNA, Sgt. Eric Pilya said Wednesday.
He didn’t give a timeframe for when a decision might be made to re-open the case. The cold case squad has five detectives and nearly 800 unsolved cases.
If police decide against a new investigation, the case will remain open but inactive.
