2 dead, 1 critical in NE Side shooting

COLUMBUS – An argument on the front porch of a Northeast Side home late Friday night erupted in gunfire, leaving two men dead and a third in critical condition, police said.

James Bernard Willis III and Calvin Edward Carmichael died after being shot at a home in the 2400 block of Dawnlight Avenue just after 11:30 p.m., the 115th and 116th homicide victims of 2017, and Anthony Dwayne Sparkes was listed in critical condition, Sgt. Jeff Strayer of the Homicide Unit said.

Witnesses told detectives they heard arguing from the front porch of the home followed by several gunshots, said Strayer.

Investigators say Willis, 30, came to the home to meet with Carmichael, 26, when the two men argued and gunfire was exchanged.

Willis tried to drive himself to the hospital but only made it as far as the intersection of Joyce Avenue and Hudson Street. Strayer says Columbus fire personnel arrived and transported Willis to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:13 a.m. Saturday

Carmichael was taken to Grant Medical Center from the scene by Mifflin Township fire personnel and died at 1:55 a.m., Strayer said.

Sparkes, 28, was taken to OSU Wexner Medical Center where Strayer says he was listed in critical condition Saturday morning

No charges had been filed but the investigation continues, Strayer said.
