2 dead after SUV crashes into building

COLUMBUS – Police say an SUV crashed into a building on the East Side early Sunday morning, killing the driver and his passenger.

UPDATE: 1/21/20 6:23 a.m.: The second victim has been identified as Layona Hill, 44, of Columbus.

Columbus police say 51-year-old Jonathan Mitchell apparently lost control of the 2003 Honda Element he was driving on the exit ramp from I-670 to Leonard Avenue and went off the road shortly before 2:00 a.m.

Police say the SUV then hit a tree before crashing into a home at 488 Hamilton Avenue.

The police release says the Columbus man and his female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said no other injuries were reported.

There was major damage to the building.
