2 fatal accidents

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two people were killed in separate accidents in Prairie Township on the Far West Side early Saturday morning, Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott said.

Leah Anthony, 29, of Orient, apparently lost control of her Jeep Cherokee on Norton Road, near the intersection with Bausch Road, at about 1:06 a.m., went into a field and rolled over several times, Scott said. Anthony was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel.

Scott says alcohol and speed appeared to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

More than two hours later, but only a couple of miles away, Scott says Freddy Jeffers Jr., 35, was struck by an eastbound 1998 Nissan Altima driven by Steven Mayes, 31, at the intersection Norton Road and W. Broad Street. While some witnesses called 911 and stayed with Jeffers, Scott says others followed Mayes until his vehicle was stopped by deputies.

Mayes, of Hilliard, was jailed on a felony charge of hit-skip.

Scott says alcohol also appears to be a factor and the crash remains under investigation
