The shooting in the westbound lanes of the interstate near Leonard Avenue was reported around 11:45 a.m. and apparently stemmed from an argument that occurred near the Easton Town Centre mall.
Authorities say it appears that the victims were targeted.
Trey Shuttlesworth Sr., 29, told police he was driving with his girlfriend, Unique Nesbit, 19, and three young children when someone in another vehicle fired multiple gunshots into his SUV, police said.
Shuttlesworth exited the highway at Goodale Boulevard and flagged down a police officer who was working at a road construction site.
Detectives say Shuttlesworth was struck in the arm, Nesbit in the back, a 10-year-old boy in the legs, and a 3-year-old boy in the foot.
Shuttlesworth, Nesbit and one child initially were hospitalized in critical condition, though all three were later upgraded to stable.
Another child was treated for minor injuries, while the third child in the SUV was unharmed.
