Gebru Berihun, 66, was scheduled to be arraigned at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in Delaware County Common Pleas Court on two counts of felonious assault following the incident at the Abbington of Powell facility, which left a man in critical condition at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital and his wife in stable condition, according to David Wiseman, chief deputy of the Professional Services Division at the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 8:09 a.m., the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Powell Police Department and the Liberty Township Fire Department responded to a report of a stabbing and fire at the facility on Bradford Court in Powell, Wiseman said.
When they arrived on the scene, law enforcement personnel apprehended the suspect, a resident of the facility, who was found outside on the grounds while the victims were found inside, suffering from knife wounds. All three are residents of the facility, Wiseman said.
A suspicious fire was found to have originated inside the suspect’s room and Liberty Township Fire Department firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with minimal damage to just that room, Wiseman said.
No injuries to residents or staff were reported as a result of the fire, Wiseman said.
The suspect had no visible injuries but Wiseman says he was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
The investigation is ongoing.
