2020 homicides on record pace in Columbus

COLUMBUS – Columbus recorded its 88th homicide over the weekend, meaning the city is ahead of the pace set during 2017, which Columbus recorded its highest number of homicides ever.

Columbus police say the city had seen 83 murders by August 17, 2017, finishing up the year with a total of 143 homicides. The city saw 74 homicides by this time in 2018 and 68 by this time last year.

A 21-year-old man stabbed to death during an argument early Sunday in the 2500 block of Cleveland Avenue was the most recent murder victim, police said.

Three men were shot early Saturday near 1135 Cleveland Avenue but all were listed in stable condition, according to police.

Columbus is not the only Ohio city that has been suffering an outbreak of violence this summer.

Police in Cincinnati said at least 18 people were shot and four killed as gunfire erupted in several places around the city overnight.

In one shooting alone, 10 people were shot, two of them fatally.

In another shooting, a 21-year-old man was killed and three other people were wounded.

Three people were shot in another incident.

Police didn’t immediately provide details about the fourth fatal shooting.

Cincinnati’s assistant police chief said the shootings seem to be separate incidents.

No suspect information was immediately available.
