22 killed on Ohio roadways over holiday weekend

COLUMBUS – COLUMBUS – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reporting 22 people lost their lives over the four-day July Fourth weekend, 29 percent more than over the same weekend last year.

The patrol says there were 21 traffic crashes during the weekend reporting period, which began July 2 and ended July 5, compared with 16 fatal crashes in 2019, which claimed 17 lives during last year’s Fourth of July reporting period from July 3 to July 7,

Impairment was determined to be a factor in at least five of this year’s fatal crashes. The Patrol responded to 631 crashes, made 425 arrests for impaired driving and 280 for drug-related charges.

Troopers made more than 22,494 traffic contacts in total, which included providing assistance to more than 2,900 motorists, the patrol reported.
