23/104 interchange open, but there is work ahead

COLUMBUS – A key South Side interchange reopened in time for the Monday morning commute after being damaged in a truck crash Friday afternoon.

Ohio Department of Transportation crews restored traffic flow on S. High Street and State Route 104 early Monday morning. A beam and part of the bridge deck (above) were damaged when the overpass was struck by a truck, ODOT spokeswoman Nancy Burton said.

Two lanes of traffic in each direction are open on South High Street over 104 but Burton says there are no designated turn lanes on the bridge, which will cause minor delays during peak travel times.

All lanes of SR 104 east and west under S. High Street are open.

Burton says this traffic pattern will be in place for at least six months.

The damaged beam had been hit before Friday’s crash so the project to replace it has been accelerated, Burton said. The same project was also going to replace the bridge deck.

Now, Burton says, the plan is to replace all 11 beams and the bridge deck, beginning as quickly as possible.
