234,000 Ohioans sign up for Obamacare

COLUMBUS, Ohio – More than 234,000 Ohioans met Sunday’s deadline to re-enroll or sign up for the first time for health coverage through the federally run marketplace, according to new data released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Those people “stuck in line” over the weekend will have until this Sunday to finish the enrollment process, according to a report in the Columbus Dispatch.

Some may qualify for a special enrollment period if they lose other coverage, get married or have a baby.

In the Columbus metropolitan area, 38,780 people signed up for coverage.

Elsewhere in Ohio, 47,388 Ohioans signed up for coverage in the Cleveland-Elyria metropolitan area; 37,639 in the Cincinnati metropolitan area (including only those portions of the metro area in Ohio and Indiana); and 14,518 in the Dayton metropolitan area.

By comparison, about 155,000 Ohioans signed up for coverage during the 2013-14 open enrollment period.

Nationwide, an estimated 11.4 million people signed up for health coverage, with 8.6 million of them in states such as Ohio that opted to use healthcare.gov.
