3-year-old’s death treated as homicide

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus police investigators say they will treat the death of a three-year-old boy as though it is a homicide until they get evidence suggesting otherwise.

Aiden Smith was brought to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in critical condition late on the night of Jan. 20, supposedly after falling down some steps while in the care of babysitters in a home on Opal Court on the Southwest Side.

Investigators searched the home the following day and notified Franklin County Children Services but did not file any charges.

Aiden died of his injuries on Tuesday. And police say the death will be investigated as a homicide “pending concurrence from the coroner’s office or until evidence suggests the contrary,” Sgt. David Sicilian said.
