4 dead: Home may have lacked smoke detectors

KETTERING, Ohio – The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office says there is no evidence of any working smoke detectors in a Kettering home where four people – two of them children — died in a blaze Thursday morning.

The fire marshal’s office says investigators have finished their scene investigation of the fire at 1963 Craig Drive and have so far not determined the cause.

Authorities say they are awaiting the coroner’s report and positive identification of the victims, though the Montgomery County coroner’s office confirmed one of the dead as 76-year-old Forrest Carroll.

A coroner’s spokeswoman said earlier that two of the dead were children and the other was a woman.

One of the three people who escaped the burning home was injured, according to a spokesman for the fire marshal’s office. There were also injuries to a police officer and a firefighter who were among the first responders on the scene.
