6-year-old brings gun to school

COLUMBUS – Police say no charges will be filed against a 6-year-old boy who brought a gun to a Northeast Side charter school Wednesday morning.

When staff at the Kids Care School on Kohr Road were alerted by a student that another student had a gun in his book bag, they secured the bag and collected the gun without incident, Det. David Bucy of the Columbus Police Gun Crimes Unit said.

Officers arrived and took possession of the firearm and brought the student into protective custody, Bucy said.

Detectives interviewed the boy with his guardians in attendance and learned that the firearm had been reported as stolen gun by a family member within the 24-hour period preceding this incident, Bucy said.

Information about the incident will be handed over to Franklin County Children Services but Bucy says, given the age of the child, no charges are expected to be forwarded to the Juvenile Prosecutor.

The firearm will be sent to the Columbus Police Crime Lab for standard processing.

The Division of Police encourages gun owners to ensure that their firearms are secured and not accessible to juveniles, Bucy said.
