COLUMBUS – Sunday will mark the 21st anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001, and the Ohio Statehouse will again mark the occasion with a memorial flag display on the west lawn of the capitol building.
Firefighter recruits from the Columbus Division of Fire Training Academy, employees of COTA and the State of Ohio, veterans and other volunteers will install 2,977 flags on the lawn of the Statehouse, representing the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93, according to the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board.
The Statehouse has been the venue for the annual 9/11 memorial since 2002, only missing 2020 due to the pandemic.
When seen from above, the design represents the World Trade Center towers, with a space in the shape of the Pentagon and an open strip representing the field in Pennsylvania, where the airliner crashed after passengers overpowered the hijackers.
The flags will be placed on the lawn following a short program on the west steps of the Statehouse and the memorial will remain open to the public from approximately 5:00 p.m. Thursday until noon Tuesday, Sept. 13.
