9 canoeists rescued on Big Darby

GROVE CITY (AP) – Authorities say nine people were rescued after four canoes overturned in Big Darby Creek Sunday afternoon.

The creek’s current was strong because of recent storms, Jackson Township Fire Captain Shawn Quincel said.

Divers scoured the water and a police helicopter searched from above to look for victims in the creek.

One woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition. But officials say she’s expected to survive. Quincel says it was a near drowning.

Others were able to make it to an island and were taken to shore in a raft.
