A White Castle fit for a king

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It won’t be your father’s White Castle.

The Columbus-based burger chain is planning to rebuild its restaurant at N. High and 2nd Streets in Victorian Village next year, expanding the restaurant and adding retail space, apartments, offices and a public parking garage in a multi-story “castle.”

White Castle and Borror Properties will submit their conceptual plans for the project to the Victorian Village Commission before the end of the year, according to a release from White Castle.

The White Castle on High is expected to employ 30 people with seating for 60, an expanded kitchen and decorative touches like an open ceiling, artwork, stainless steel components, accent glass and a design that will allow the restaurant to be open to the outdoors. The restaurant will also feature free Wi-Fi and flat screen monitors.

Founded in 1921, White Castle bills itself as America’s first fast-food hamburger chain. There are 23 White Castle restaurants in Columbus, a regional office, a meat processing plant and Whlte Castle’s corporate headquarters.
