ABC’s can combat SIDS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three babies died every week in a Ohio as a result of sleeping in unsafe conditions, like adult beds, couches or chairs, and health officials are addressing the problem with a new campaign to remind parents of the ABC’s of safe sleep for their infants.

Columbus Public Health and the Ohio Department of Health are collaborating on the campaign to remind parents that babies should: Always sleep Alone, on their Backs, and in a safety-approved Crib. They say infants who are put down to sleep under those conditions are less likely to suffer from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Local health officials say 79 infants in Columbus died from 2009 to 2011 due to unsafe sleep habits.

The campaign, which began Monday, includes television, radio, print and online advertisements and public service announcements n movie theatres; and social media, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube;

The campaign will run until March 2015, and is funded in part by the Central Benefits Health Care Foundation.
