Homicide unit detectives say it appears that two-year-old Jason Hill grabbed a firearm that wasn’t properly secured at his family’s home on Noe-Bixby Road and shot himself in the head just before 2:44 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

This is the second accidental shooting this week involving a small child who found an unsecured firearm in their home.

Jason’s father, Brandon drove to the parking lot of a convenience store at the intersection of Noe-Bixby and Refugee roads where he told a uniformed officer that his son had been shot, according to homicide unit Sgt. Stanley Latta.

Jason Hill was taken to Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries and Brandon Hill, 24, was detained for questioning.

Police determined Brandon was the only other person at the home when Jason found the weapon and charged him with endangering children, a felony, and Latta said he could face additional charges if his son dies of his injuries.
