COLUMBUS – Columbus saw a trio of homicides on Sunday, bringing the total number for the year to 39, still well below the number seen a year ago, when the city was on the way to setting a record for the number of murders in a single year.
A 42-year-old man was shot to death early Sunday across the street from a Northeast Side restaurant that recently closed after seeing two fatal shootings on its property since the first of the year.
Officers sent to the 5700 Block of Cleveland Avenue at approximately 4:49 a.m. on a report of a shooting found Fidel Corral suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to Sgt. Edward Powell III of the Columbus police homicide unit.
Corral died later at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
UPDATE 5/4/22 7:37 a.m.: Police have released the name of the victim in the following incident.
At 1:29 p.m. officers found Keeyon Capers inside a vehicle that was parked in the rear of the Hamilton STEM Academy in the 2000 block of Hamilton Avenue, Sgt. David Shimberg of the homicide unit said.
Capers, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene, Shimberg said.
This incident is still under investigation.

Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies are reportedly talking with a person of interest in connection with the death of a man on the West Side.
Deputies were called to the scene on Eastham Way in Lincoln Village Sunday afternoon, according to report by WBNS 10-TV.
5 shot in Springfield
Authorities say an early morning shooting in Springfield killed one person and wounded four others.
Police said officers responded to multiple calls about shots fired on the city’s south side shortly after 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
They found three women and two men in their 20s wounded.
One woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name and other details weren’t immediately released.
The other four victims were taken to hospitals, where there was no immediate word on their conditions. Police are trying to determine what led to the gunfire.
No arrests were immediately announced.
