COLUMBUS (AP) – Ohio’s apple producers say this year’s crop is a bountiful one.
With the late summer apple-picking season underway, orchards this year survived all sorts of weather extremes during the growing season to yield some good fruit, said Bill Dodd, president of the Ohio Fruit Growers Marketing Association in Newcomerstown.
Dodd tells The Columbus Dispatch that the crop should be average-to-better throughout the state. He said the late summer heat wave will sweeten the fruit.
The choice crop will make an orchard visit worthwhile for consumers.
Most people who visit orchards to pick apples are seeking the Honeycrisp variety, an ideal apple to eat right off the tree, says Andy Lynd, co-owner of Lynd Fruit Farm near Pataskala.
