Area jobless rate rises to 4.8

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The unemployment rate in central Ohio increased for the second month in a row, to 4.8 percent in June from 4.4 percent in May, according to figures released Tuesday morning by the state.

Columbus still boasted the lowest unemployment rate of any of Ohio’s largest cities, at 4.8 percent, compared with 10 percent in Cleveland, 7.2 percent in Dayton and 6.2 percent in Cincinnati, according to monthly data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The regional unemployment rate in April was 4.3 percent.

The jobless rate in the Columbus metropolitan area has fallen 1.8 percent since last June, when it was 6.6 percent.

The statewide rate in June was 5.5 percent, the lowest level since before the Great Recession, the same as May and down from 5.7 percent in April.

The state’s and the region’s rates for June remained below the national rate of 6.1 percent.

Delaware’s 4.1 percent was third lowest among Ohio’s 88 counties, higher than Holmes (3.9 and Auglaize (4.0) counties.

Monroe County had the highest jobless rate at 11.7 percent.
