UPDATE: This article has been edited to include the name of the officer, released late Friday

Officers were called to the area of the intersection of Parsons and Southwood Avenues at 7:59 p.m. on a report that a man in a white hat, white t-shirt and white pants was sitting in a white Ford Expedition and had just pointed a gun at them, division spokesman Sgt. Rick Weiner said. The caller also said the man had an assault rifle and appeared to be intoxicated, Weiner said.

When the officers found the SUV parked in the rear of a home on the corner and approached it, Weiner says Jimmie Patton got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at one of the officers. Officer Alex Mottinger then shot Patton who died later at Grant Medical Center.

Investigators recovered a rifle and a handgun at the scene, Weiner said.

No other injuries were reported.

Weiner says this is the fourth police-involved shooting of 2017 in Columbus.

Mottinger joined the police division in 2015, Weiner said.
