Armed neighbor foils violent break-in

COLUMBUS – Two would-be burglars found themselves exchanging gunfire with the neighbor of their intended victim during a break-in in Franklinton Tuesday night.

At 11:08 p.m., Carlton R. Huffman and an accomplice forced their way into Michael Certain’s home on N. Guilford Avenue and shot him twice with a handgun, investigators with the Columbus police assault unit said.

Huffman, 22, and the other suspect, whose name was not released by police, engaged in a gun battle with Dennis Hordge, 42, a resident of a nearby home who came to Certain’s aid, police said.

Huffman, 22, has been arrested on a charge of aggravated burglary.
