Arrest in case of body in mattress

COLUMBUS – A suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of a man whose bullet-riddled body was found in a mattress on the West Side last week.

Roderick Richards, 39, has been charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence in connection with the shooting death of Jesse Shields, 38, Sgt. Eric Piliya of the Homicide Unit said.

Shields’ body was found Feb. 3 by officers responding to a report that someone had found a body inside a mattress by a Dumpster at in the 3600 block of Briggs Road.

The Franklin County Coroner’s Office determined that Shields had been shot multiple times.

This was the 23rd homicide of the year in Columbus.
